About the authors: 1
Renowned artist photographer Bruce Rae has always been interested in the transitory ephemeral order of nature, “in the narrow span of existence between life and death”. For Tableaux Whispers Echoes Rae invited Terry Jones, writer and performer with Monty Python's Flying Circus, director, historian, author and poet, to write his impressions on a new series of his still life salt prints. Rae's images, the 'Tableaux' of the book's title, picture moths, butterflies, seahorses and shells. Rae employs his trademark style of traditional photography, using 'an aging wooden Kodak large format camera'. Their friend, Tom Phillips RA, artist, musician, theatre designer, indulging his passion for typography and using the text of Jones's poetry as his template, then created a completely new image - part text, part line and shading, part colour - that complements and weaves each tableau together. Each of the three artists provides a short introduction explaining his involvement in the project.
