Weston approaches Here is a subject requiring no introduction. This is a beautifully produced book with 240 illustrations printed in duotone, being taken from the collection of the Huntingdon Library. In the 1940s Weston selected, printed and gifted 500 prints to the Library and this is the first major book based on the collection. The first 100 pages of 288 are biographical, covering Weston’s life and work, including reproductions from the albums and notebooks of Weston and Nancy Newhall. There are some examples from an unpublished book of Weston nudes by the latter. The plates take up the major part of the book and are divided into 10 sections by subject. At approximately one foot square the combination of size of format and excellent reproduction really shows off the images, they positively glow. This legacy showcases what the man himself considered was his best work, and I am sure he would have felt that the publishers have done him proud.
Edward Weston: A Legacy, by Jennifer A Watts, published by Merrell in association with the Huntingdon Library, £40, ISBN 1 85894 206 3.
