One hundred San Francisco skies Richard Misrach is well-known for his large scale projects - both in terms of their scope and in the camera format. The 100 images which feature in Golden Gate were made over a three-year period from precisely the same vantage point looking across San Francisco Bay towards the famous eponymous bridge. Now, 100 pictures taken from the same spot do not sound much like a recipe for pictorial success, especially when it’s a view captured by a million other cameras. But Misrach’s frame is 90% sky, the images are made all year round and at every time of day and night, and in all weathers; the bridge itself is almost incidental. The images are ordered chronologically, all are extraordinarily beautiful, and turning through the pages I found myself chuckling when a bank of cloud enveloped the vast steel structure. Don’t ask me why. I just know that any scepticism I had prior to opening this book was utterly blown away.
